Declaring War on MS Movie Maker

After getting a new laptop for work, the first step was to get it set up, to remove anything not needed and install everything else on there which is. Installation includes all the stuff needed for work, including all the ESRI Desktop software, a couple of SDK's for VBA and Dot Net. The uninstallation typically includes all the garbage installed by default, such as Messenger and all those stupid games I never use in the start menu.

One application however, was not in the uninstall menu, Movie Maker. I wanted it off my start menu and off my computer. Figuring out how to do this proved a little more interesting. Movie Maker is located in the Programs directory in the C drive. This was easy enough to find. All the dll's are in there along with the executable named moviemk.exe.

I could have simply deleted this directory and the shortcut from the Start Menu, but this has the possibility to create other irritating errors down the road. The solution? Hack the registry of course! Simply search the registry for "moviemk," and delete any registry keys for this irritating little app. Now the directory and shortcut can be deleted. Windows has no clue Movie Maker ever existed and life is good!

HI Joel

It's funny that that old post is the first thing that pops up when you type kafsky into google! There are many posts more recent than that one -- wonder what makes that one so special? :)
